As we waited for everyone to arrive, the kids played in these huge troughs of corn kernals. Here Kyra is with her buddy Shayna.
Next we took a hayride to the pumpkin patch so the kids could each pick one. Prior to the field trip the class came up with a hypotheis. The idea is that the smaller and oranger the pumpkin the more seeds it contains. They will do the "experimention" when they go back to school. But needless to say ALL the kids wanted a small, bright orange pumpkin. Here is Kyra was her prized pumpkin! Next, one of the people at the pumpkin patch gave the CUTEST presentation. She explained how photosythesis works, and how we often times mimic the natural features of plants to our benefit. For example, how a guy was out walking his dog, and noticed how thistles stuck to his dogs fur. He looked at it under a microscope, and invented velcro. She also gave the example of some plant that repels water, and once put under the microscope scientists noticed that the leaves had millions of small bumps on the surface. So they are now using that same concept on sky scraper windows, so that they will become water proof in a way and elimitate the number of times a window washer would have to risk their life to clean the windows.
Lastly, was the corn maze. At various points through the maze they had a numbered marker. We were provided with sheet of questions regarding the information the kiddos just learned, and if they got the right answer they were told to turn left or right, to get out of the maze.
We then had lunch and headed home. Kyra and I both had a great time! I can't wait for her next field trip!

FUN. I love going on field trips with my kids too. So nice. So what was the result of their experimentation. Do the smaller more orange pumpkins have more seeds???
